JOB SUMMARY AND DESCRIPTION OF TASKS
Position: SUBSTITUTE BUILDING CUSTODIANS
Reports to: District Maintenance and Operations Supervisor
Salary Range: $21.68 per hour
Basic Function: On-Call Substitute as needed.
Sub Custodian may: Keep premises of school buildings in clean and orderly condition. Performs work of a general custodial nature including mopping, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, strip and clean and apply floor finish, cleaning and sanitize restrooms/showers, emptying waste baskets, washing windows, walls, and wood-work; changing light bulbs; unplugging drains, may shovel, plow, and sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate. Work may involve the use of mechanical equipment and tools. Make minor repairs. Work from specific instructions and perform duties independently. May set up and take down for breakfast and lunch; may assist in keeping accurate inventory of supplies. May assist maintenance in various tasks associated in the day to day operations of a school district. Demonstrate pride in the job duties. Perform all duties of the position within the scope of the WahlukeSchool District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality. Be responsive to the individual directions and requests of building principals. Other duties as may be assigned.
Typical Work: Sub Custodian
A custodian in this position will:
Use power equipment and hand tools such as shovel, broom, mop, squeegee, buffer, polisher, and vacuum required for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, and furniture. Clean and sanitize sinks, toilets, shower rooms, and fixtures. Clean up spills which may involve bodily fluids. Empty trash containers and wastebaskets. Clean whiteboards as needed. Dust furniture and light fixtures. Sweep, mop, and polish floors. Replace light bulbs, tissue, and other restroom supplies. Wash windows. Keep facility litter free. May clean and replace univent filters. Other tasks, which may be periodic in nature, to ensure that buildings are maintained in as clean and pleasing an environment as possible. Ability to perform minor maintenance and repairs which do not require a great amount of time or specialized skills. Keep accurate inventory of custodial supplies, report needs to supervisor. Conduct routine inspections of school facilities and grounds in assigned area, reporting deficiencies and safety concerns to supervisor in a timely manner. Interact with people and speak in a manner that reflects community standards of politeness, civility, and human sensitivity. Be responsive to needs of faculty, staff and students. Accomplish all tasks in a professional manner. May set up and take down for breakfast and lunch. May assist in the supervision and management of students to ensure orderly behavior and use of facilities during meal periods.
Qualifications: Sub Custodian
High School Diploma or GED preferred for substitutes but not required. Ability to read and comprehend written directions, instructions, and material safety information in order to safely perform job functions. Ability to follow directions for the safe and appropriate mixing and application of supplies and materials. Ability to speak and communicate in English and Spanish may be required for some assignments. Evidence of general custodial knowledge and skill. Evidence of history of good attendance, dependability and punctuality; organize time well and maintain a consistent daily schedule; positive rapport with staff and students. Ability to be a self-starter and self-directed; flexible and work under time pressure. Experience and ability to use tools and equipment of a general nature in order to make repairs and maintain facilities. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and to contribute appropriately to a cooperative and supportive work/school environment. Willing to take directions, follow policies and procedures. Ability to work well with employees and others. Model appropriate and healthy adult behavior. Physically able to do required work which could include some heavy and sustained lifting (up to 50 lbs) squatting, bending, stooping, carrying, climbing of ladders up to 25 feet, work an 8-hour shift, and other functions. Valid Washington driver’s license. May be required to complete physical examination. Clearance for State and National background checks.
