Position:                      Para-Pro, Special Education Inclusive Preschool

Classification:             Classified; FLSA Non-Exempt

Representation:          Union representation available by the Public School Employee union (PSE)

Reports to:                 Classroom Instructor, Preschool Director                               

 

Salary Range              Current PSE Contract Salary Schedule for Special Education Lifeskills Para

Basic Function:         7.25 hours/day: School calendar plus Preschool Camp work days (If scheduled). Assist preschool instructor to perform instructional and support tasks related to the preschool students’ educational development within the total school environment.  Bilingual Spanish helpful.

Summary: assignment is 7.25/hrs per day, school year calendar; Assist classroom instructor, and certified staff  to coordinate and perform instructional and support tasks related to the preschool-aged students’ educational, emotional and physical development, special education identified needs within the total school environment.  Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts. Assist individuals to understand and overcome social and emotional problems. Experience and/or educational training in early childhood development, familiar with the needs of developmental disabled students helpful.  Possess computer and application skills and ability to become proficient in necessary software applications .  Demonstrated ability to work successfully with staff and students. Ability to lift and maneuver children with assistance and /or equipment. May provide designed services for preschool aged youth in community Inspire programs. May include other duties. Bilingual Spanish helpful.

 

Typical Work:

  • May provide attention to the needs of disabled or handicapped students.
  • Assist individuals to understand and overcome social and emotional problems.
  • May assist students with clothing, movement, toilet usage, feeding.
  • Lift and maneuver children and /or equipment.
  • Aid students with special learning needs by administering remedial work.
  • Perform routine tasks in monitoring and assisting student progress in classrooms and other school activities.
  • Discusses assigned teaching area with classroom teacher/special education director and para Pro II to coordinate instructional efforts. 
  • Provide Spanish instruction and translation when necessary/required.
  • Score objective tests and record grades.
  • Proctor tests, quizzes, drills and other exercises designed by certified staff.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
  • Assist teaching staff in the development of teaching aids and materials.
  • Supervise students in halls, study halls, libraries, playgrounds, learning centers and transportation areas.
  • Assist in organizing and monitoring recreational activities.
  • Accompany groups of students on field trips and other outings.
  • Assist teaching staff in the development of teaching aids and materials.
  • Perform basic clerical tasks for teachers (catalog, sort, file, assemble, reproduce and distribute classroom materials, collect money, check out equipment)
  • Other duties as required.
  • Score objective tests and record grades.

Qualifications:

  High School Diploma. Bilingual Spanish fluency.  Two years of college level coursework or pass a basic skills test.  Additional ECEAP requirements (If ECEAP funded position) include Early Childhood credits, or ability to obtain necessary college course work. Required to complete State Fundamental Course of Study and General ParaEducator Courses for paraeducators. Pass FBI/WA State Patrol fingerprint background check and Dept of Early Learning MERIT background check. May be required to have a TB medical test.  Successfully complete a written Spanish/English translation test if required. Experience with children or students in an educational setting and / or evidence of an interest in supporting learning experiences for preschool aged student preferred. Possess basic clerical skills and a familiarity with first aid procedures. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally with assistance.   Able and expected to attend work as scheduled. Able to model appropriate professional behavior. Ability to solve practical problems, apply appropriate judgment and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to maneuver  to perform the functions associated with preschool activities including, kneeling, bending, squatting, lifting.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and district records required.
