POSITION TITLE:       Special Education Teacher Resource Room, Initial Assignment Saddle Mt Elementary; Leave Replacement position for 24-25 School Year with the possibility of the position continuing beyond this school year. 

 

REPORTS TO:                 Principal, and Special Education Director

 

CLASSIFICATION:      Certificated non-supervisory; FLSA Exempt

 

REPRESENTATION:     Union representation available by the Wahluke Education Association (WEA)

 

Terms of Employment:          As per Wahluke Education Association Agreement work schedule. Wahluke Certified staff also receive a 5% Professional Learning Activity Stipend;Eight additional compensated work days; Professional Developement Funds; Longevity Stipends beginning in fifth year of teaching. All contract stipends and leave benefits are prorated from date of hire.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Special Education Teacher will coordinate and provide developmentally appropriate and equitable educational services to students whose abilities differ from their peers. Responsible for identifying the individual needs of their students, creating a supportive and effective learning environment and ensuring their students have the resources they need to succeed. This includes serving identified students in a resource room setting as well as an inclusive model.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:       

  • Current state teaching certificate in Special Education required, or ability to secure a certificate/waiver to teach special education qualifying students.  
  • Knowledge of the Special Education process and laws.
  • Experience serving students with autism and a working knowledge of strategies that appropriately address positive learning and behavioral experiences.   
  • Successful experience implementing G.L.A.D. and/or SIOP instructional strategies preferred; training helpful. 
  • Bilingual/Biliterate Spanish helpful.
  • Understanding of Whole Brain teaching  strategies and successful incorporation into instructional delivery preferred.
  • Understanding/Knowledge of 5D CEL Instructional Frameworks and ability to incorporate dimensions in daily teaching practices.  
  • Knowledge of/training in Safe & Civil Schools, PBIS and /or Character Strong  programs preferred.
  • Technology proficient or ability to gain proficiency to integrate technology into the instructional delivery and for communication and reporting purposes.
  • Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, and evaluate student performance.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum standards, education code, appropriate instructional subjects.
  • Successful experience or ability to obtain proficiency in distance learning applications and management techniques.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior.
  • Able to work in a calm, efficient safe manner.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance as well as demonstrated physical agility (i.e., bending, getting up and down from the floor, etc.).
  • Able and expected to attend work as scheduled.
  • Able to model appropriate professional behavior.
  • Ability to solve practical problems, apply appropriate judgment, and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student and district records required.  

  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS.  This listing is a representation of job functions and may not be exhaustive. 

  1. Participate in special education process from screening through identification, IEP development, and assist in providing appropriate identification and placement of students with disabilities. 

  2. Assist in the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Act, (IDEA) in accordance with district policies and procedures.

  3. Develop and implement a schedule for services that reflect students needs and as directed within a students IEP

  4. Support general education teachers

  5. Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request.
  6. Teach elementary subject academics, social skills, and/or behavior skills to students with a variety of disabilities.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and competency in instructional practices. 
  8. Schedule and facilitate IEP team meetings.
  9. Design and implement Specially Designed Instruction for all types of identified student needs including students with autism. 
  10. Provide pre-vocational and self-help opportunities.
  11.  Participate in diagnosing each child’s academic, emotional, social and cognitive needs and design instruction which will address these needs.
  12. May perform a variety of medically related activities, such as hygiene (i.e., toileting, diapering, feeding, etc.), body care chores, and cleaning intermittent catheterization as necessary.
  13. Participate as a member of Student Assistance Teams, Multidisciplinary Teams and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
  14. Work cooperatively and closely with administrators, instructional staff members, paraeducators, other school personnel and parents.
  15. Interact positively with students, professional associates, parents and patrons of the school district.
  16. Schedule, supervise and train paraeducators to work in a variety of settings including pull-out and inclusionary settings.
  17. Develop and implement Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and assume responsibilities of case management for each assigned student.
  18. Assess and monitor student progress using a variety of assessment techniques/instruments and adjust instruction accordingly.
  19. Work closely with classroom teachers in order to align Special Education curriculum with general education curriculum.
  20. Devise instructional procedures that actively engage all learners.
  21. Prepare reports and other documentation as necessary in a timely manner.
  22. Coordinate and schedule meetings regarding programming and placement of students on individual education programs.
  23. Attend designated department meetings and trainings.
  24. Develop appropriate post-secondary transition goals and opportunities.
  25. Provide flexible inclusion schedules for individual students as appropriate.
  26. Collect student data using a variety of data collection forms for purposes of determining appropriate instruction.
  27. Monitors student activities for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment and adhering to education code, district, and/or school policies.
  28. Promote high expectations, demonstrate a caring attitude and establish an environment that supports high achievement in students.
  29. Provides for individual differences in the learning needs of students, provides a classroom climate that is based upon mutual respect, rapport, fairness, and consistency ensuring that every child has an equitable opportunity for success.
  30. Willingness and ability to attend trainings, including travel.  Maybe outside the school year calendar, may include overnight.
  31. Proficient in the use of technology to enhance student learning.
  32. Abide by state statutes, school board policies, and regulations.
  33. Ability and willingness to attend student field trips.
  34. Maintain professional student boundaries.
  35. May provide and manage distance learning.
  36. Maintains confidentiality and non-judgmental views of children and families served.
  37. Perform job related, non-teaching duties
  38. Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

  

 

Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to and lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance, and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of consistently to move objects.
